Lay-Z-Spa E01 Error Code
What it means and how to fix it (water flow paddle / flow switch)
If your Lay-Z-Spa shows an E01 error as soon as you power the unit on, it’s usually related to the water flow switch assembly (often called the flow paddle).
What the E01 error actually means
Inside your pump/heater unit is a water flow paddle that sits in the closed position when the spa is idle.
When you press Filter or Heat, water starts moving and the paddle swings, which triggers the reed switch (a small magnetic switch). Only when the control board detects correct water flow will it allow power to the heater element.
E01 happens when:
Your water flow paddle is being read as “open / flow detected” at the wrong time — usually at power-on when it should be closed and waiting.
That tells the logic board:
“Something isn’t right with the flow sensor signal.”
So it shuts down and displays E01.
Common causes of E01
E01 is most commonly caused by one of these:
Debris or dried residue sticking around the paddle hinge
Scale build-up affecting paddle movement
Swollen / damaged paddle magnet
Faulty reed switch (stuck “closed circuit” even when the paddle is down)
Less commonly: a damaged cable/connector to the flow switch assembly, or water ingress onto the connection
Step-by-step fixes
Step 1: Try freeing the paddle without opening the unit
These quick checks often fix it if the paddle is just stuck.
A) Give the unit a firm knock (safe “shock” method)
Sometimes the paddle is stuck up due to dried debris.
With the unit powered off, give the side of the machine a firm knock (not a smash) to help the paddle drop back down.
B) Warm-water soak through the A & B pipes
If knocking doesn’t work:
Turn off power at the plug.
Tip the pump/heater unit onto its back.
Fill the A and B pipes with warm water (not boiling).
Leave it to soak for 10–20 minutes to soften dried residue.
Drain and try powering back on.
If the paddle was stuck from grime or dried “gunk”, this often clears it.
Step 2: If E01 remains — inspect the flow switch assembly
If the error doesn’t clear, it’s time for a proper inspection.
Safety first
Disconnect power completely
Do not work on the unit while plugged in
If you’re not confident opening the unit, stop here and book a repair
What to do:
Remove the top cover of the pump/heater unit.
Locate the water flow switch assembly.
Remove the screws to access the paddle area.
Inspect the paddle and hinge:
Is it stuck?
Is the hinge clogged?
Does it move freely?
What you’re looking for:
If the paddle magnet is swollen or damaged
Replace the flow paddle.
A damaged magnet can make the switch read incorrectly.
If the paddle looks fine and moves freely
Replace the magnetic reed switch.
A faulty reed switch can get “stuck” reading as closed (as if flow is present) even when it isn’t.
When you should stop and get help
If you’ve tried:
knocking the unit,
warm-water soaking,
and inspection,
…and E01 continues, the issue may be:
reed switch wiring,
connector corrosion,
or a control board fault.
At that point, a quick diagnosis is usually faster (and cheaper) than guessing parts.

Frequently Asked Questions – Lay-Z-Spa E01 Error
The E01 error usually indicates a water flow switch issue. It means the control board is detecting the water flow paddle in the open (flowing) position when the spa is first powered on. The paddle should be closed and only activate once you press the filter or heater button.
No. The spa will not allow the heater to operate while the E01 error is active. This is a safety feature designed to prevent the heater from running without proper water circulation.
No.
E01 = Flow switch reading incorrectly at startup (paddle stuck or faulty reed switch).
E02 = Water flow restriction while running (usually blocked filters, airlocks, or pump issues).
They are related to water flow but caused by different problems.
The most common causes are:
Debris or dried residue stuck around the paddle hinge
Limescale build-up
A swollen or damaged paddle magnet
A faulty magnetic reed switch
Corrosion inside the flow switch assembly
Sometimes, yes.
You can try:
Powering off and giving the unit a firm knock to free a stuck paddle
Tipping the unit onto its back and soaking the A & B pipes with warm water to loosen dried debris
If the paddle is just stuck, this may clear the error.
If the paddle moves freely and appears undamaged but E01 remains, the reed switch may be stuck in a closed circuit position. In that case, replacing the reed switch is usually required.
Almost never.
E01 is typically a low-cost component issue (paddle or reed switch), not a full pump failure.
Yes. Heavy limescale can restrict paddle movement or affect the magnet’s signal. Regular descaling helps prevent this issue. Check out the LayZrepair NO SCALE in the online store to prevent limescale
